Individual Health Care Reform Mandate

Yesterday the Department of Health and Human Services announced that individuals whose insurance coverage was dropped will be able to qualify for a hardship exemption for 2014 and therefore will not owe the individual penalty for not having health insurance.  The Affordable Care Act requires individuals to have health insurance starting January 1, 2014.  There are some limited exemptions applicable to this mandate which as of December 20, 2013 now include individuals whose insurance was dropped and were unable to find other affordable coverage.  For a list of other exemptions visit http://www.hhs.gov/healthcare.

The Washington Post recently wrote an article on the topic as well.  http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/wp/2013/12/19/the-obama-administration-just-delayed-the-individual-mandate-for-people-whose-plans-have-been-canceled/
